Rock the Casbah (actually, this isn’t Rock the Casbah, it’s Mustapha Dance—but same difference, really) was poor little Topper Headon’s swan song. Not literally, of course; Topper is alive and, last I heard, well. But right before he was fired from the Clash for being a heroin addict, he sat down in the studio and wrote Rock the Casbah. In, like, an hour, or something ridiculous like that. He recorded every part except, I think, the lead guitar, but when you have Mick Jones on guitar, it’s probably best to leave that one alone. Anyway, my point is this: the guy was a genius. He wrote a megahit in a single day and recorded almost every part himself. And he was a heroin addict! AND THEN THEY FIRED HIM!

I don’t think it took quite as much intelligence/aptitude to write the lyrics to I Kissed a Girl, but that’s okay. That’s just for fun.

Edited on 8/24 to include an improved version!

So… I love the Clash. To the sky and back, love them love them love them. Now, I don’t feel the same way about Jay-Z, but I’ve always found it hard to deny that 99 Problems is catchy as haaaale. Mix it with the classic bassline of Guns of Brixton and you have a sick (albeit very, very rough) mashup, posted here for your enjoyment!

So… I didn’t really think this would work, but it did, and it’s kind of great. I’m not sure how I feel about the horns towards the end, as they clash a little with the piano, but we can always amend things, can’t we? Anyway, this is H.O.L.L.A. (or, alternately and less-good-ly, HollaD.A.N.C.E.), a mashup of Justice’s D.A.N.C.E. (again with the Justice!) and Hollaback Girl by the inimitable and sometimes-really-weird Gwen Stefani.

Generally speaking, I think Kate Nash’s lyrics are crappy and that she sort of stole Lily Allen’s shtick. But subjectivity aside, I don’t know anyone who would be reluctant to admit that Pumpkin Soup (which I heard on a commercial, loved, and assumed was called I Just Want Your Kiss… until I sifted through my iTunes library and realized that Pumpkin Soup sounded awfully familiar) has a bangin’ beat. Absolutely bangin’, horns, synth squeaks and all. And, as far as I’m concerned, you can’t do much better than M.I.A., lyrically speaking. So enjoy this little ditty, which I like to call Pull Up the Pumpkins. I’m not much of a dancer, myself, but even I’d encourage you to dance to this one.

While I am not a great fan of Nelly Furtado, her rhymes are slightly sick, if you know what I mean. Really, though, that’s not why I decided to make this particular mashup—rather, I was frustrated with my inability to secure an a cappella version of Heart of Glass and decided to take the song into my own hands, only to find that it had the same BPM as Promiscuous. Thus, Promiscuous Glass—a song that makes very little sense, but which came out the cleanest yet of all my endeavors—was born.
